Crete is the largest island in Greece and also one of the most visited by tourists. Here you can find both trendy, large resorts and secluded guesthouses, but regardless of the choice of location, every tourist vacationing in Crete must pay a tax.
How high is the tourist tax in Crete?
The tourist tax in Greece is the same for the whole country, which means that you pay the same amount in Crete as well as in those less frequently visited places. However, the tax is not fixed, but increases depending on the standard of the hotel. During the holiday season (April – October), the tourist tax is:
1* and 2* – 1.5 EUR/day
3* – 3 EUR/day
4* – 7 EUR/day
5* – 10 EUR/day
In the low season, i.e. between November and February, the tourist tax is:
1* and 2* – 0.5 EUR/day
3* – 1.5 EUR/day
4* – 3 EUR/day
5* – 4 EUR/day
Private rentals vs. the tourist tax
Crete has a very well-developed tourist base, so you don’t necessarily have to stay in a hotel. For private rentals, prices in Crete depend on location, and for a long time this was an attractive alternative to hotels, but 2024 private accommodations will be subject to a mandatory tourist tax from March, at €1.5 for apartments and €10 for villas.
