Private rentals vs. the tourist tax

Crete has a very well-developed tourist base, so you don’t necessarily have to stay in a hotel. For private rentals, prices in Crete depend on location, and for a long time this was an attractive alternative to hotels, but 2024 private accommodations will be subject to a mandatory tourist tax from March, at €1.5 for apartments and €10 for villas.
